I've watched both these guys grow as both actors and responsible young adults. TCTA provides a great opportunity for people of all ages and walks of life to expand their horizons. I, too, was very moved by "A Taste of Sunrise" and look forward to seeing "Jellybean Conspiracy". Well done TCTA! Though tonight was just our 3 rehearsal I have already learned so much from this production. Jared, the young man with Down Syndrome is so inspiring. I am now very proud to call Jared my friend. While I can't tell you if Jared remembers my name from day to day, his love, friendship, and caring for others makes him someone you instanly feel connected to. I think our society is wrong when we refer to people as "Disabled". Because if there is one thing I will take away from this wonderful production it's that just because we may look, talk, or act different doesn't mean we can't all love and care for each and every person. I think it's great that TCT's Academy can produce shows like The Jellybean Conspiracy and The Taste of Sunrise, I hope we can do more soon! I know that A Taste of Sunrise was one that hit the heart of some people, and this one will too, It's great that not only do we do shows that leave people thinking that it was a great night out on the town, but that we leave people thinking about and really contemplating what it is that they just saw, and that everyone can make a difference. Jennifer Fletcher, Linda Falley and I presented a program about The Jellybean Conspiracy to the Minerva Club (a literary and musical club that's been in existence in Topeka for over 100 years). It made me realize that most people don't have any idea how exciting the next play in the youth series is going to be...and how different it is from the usual play. Jennifer has been traveling all over the state visiting InterHab agencies and casting people with disabilities (and sometimes their families) for the first act of the play. Every performance will have a different first act! One night it will be performed by folks from Wichita, another night from Hays, another night from Topeka, Hutchison or Johnson County. So far, they've served at 100 people with developmental disabilities with the drama therapy workshops. The second act will be performed by our youth theatre actors paired with a young man from Topeka West who has Downs Syndrome. The play deals with young girl whose brother has Downs, and how she learns to appreciate the gifts he brings the world. As we shared the concept of the play and the way that we are producing it with our audience today, I realized that even our closest friends and volunteers probably don't know what a remarkable production we are getting ready to mount in February 2008 and just wanted you to know this is going to be really something special!
